Next Spokes Ride

Sunday 3rd July 2022. Meet at 10:00 outside the Usher Hall, Lothian Rd.

Destination to be decided on Wednesday. Distance will be around 70km (42 miles). Lunch in a café.

Please check your bike before the ride, i.e. tyre pressure, chain and brakes. Bring some money for emergencies and café stops and/or post ride refreshments. Don't forget snacks to keep your energy levels up and a drink to consume en-route.

Don't forget to bring a small toolkit to fit your bike and a spare inner tube in case you get a puncture. It is much easier to replace the tube than to repair a tube, especially if you have a slow puncture.

Spokes Ride Treasure Hunt

A wonderful day on last Sunday, 30 people turned up to the start of the Treasure Hunt. A fantastic day out, although it was a bit cool. I’m glad you all enjoyed the ride. A further report of the ride will be sent out on Saturday. This gives those of you who did not hand in their entries on the day time to post in your entries!! However, you do have until Friday to post them to me as long as the envelope is post marked Friday!! So its not too late :-).

Out of the Comfort Zone?

"Never write about a place until you're away from it, because that gives you perspective" - Ernest Hemingway

Those of you new to the email list may well be shocked by the distance we did on this ride. Normal Spokes Rides are not over 73 miles; they are normally 35 to 45 miles. Well done to Saqib, who has only been riding his bike for six months, and is still new to changing gears. He did it, he made to Peebles and back. He sailed away from his safe harbour and thoroughly enjoyed the day out. If you have done the Charity rides like Glasgow to Edinburgh or Edinburgh St. Andrews, then you are more than capable of joining us on a Spokes Ride.

On the Spokes Summer Ride, August 19th 2007, we passed the Piper's Grave. A search on the Internet revealed this story, and a couple of others too!

"The Piper's Grave lies alongside the B709 midway between Innerleithen and Middleton / Heriot. Tradition tells us that this is the last resting place of an itinerant piper who eked out his meagre living some time early in the 18th century. He was known to frequent the local hostelries taking wagers that he could play any tune that a customer could care to name."

Flaming June?

Late again with the report, but I am now motoring on my website, hopefully adding more content over the next few weeks. Thanks to everyone who turned up on the cycle ride on the 3rd June.

If you saw my earlier note, you'll know Mark Symmonds had his red and white GT MTB stolen from the High St. recently. I'll put a couple of pictures on the website. The bike had a pair of Vaude waterproof panniers attached to it.

If you're doing the St. Andrew's ride today, well done.

Summertime?

I helped at the Spokes' stall at Fringe Sunday on the 12th August!! Quite good fun. The Spokes Ride was a bit damp, but was still a success. We are pretty lucky with the weather. Not many rides are cancelled due to the weather, and the lunchtime stops are always sociable.

At the request of the more adventurous among you, I have decided to run three extra rides over the summer. These rides will start earlier, meeting at 9:30am leaving at 9:45am from the Usher Hall. They will be longer than normal Spokes rides, about 60 to 70 miles, but the speed will remain about the same. There will be two or three shorter stops in the ride. Probably best bring a picnic, spare inner tube, small tool kit and some energy bars.
