Next Spokes Ride

Sunday 3rd July 2022. Meet at 10:00 outside the Usher Hall, Lothian Rd.

Destination to be decided on Wednesday. Distance will be around 70km (42 miles). Lunch in a café.

Please check your bike before the ride, i.e. tyre pressure, chain and brakes. Bring some money for emergencies and café stops and/or post ride refreshments. Don't forget snacks to keep your energy levels up and a drink to consume en-route.

Don't forget to bring a small toolkit to fit your bike and a spare inner tube in case you get a puncture. It is much easier to replace the tube than to repair a tube, especially if you have a slow puncture.

Weather

What a day. Woke from a nightmare on the sofa in the front room at 4:30. The sun streaming in through the window. Had I missed the Spokes Ride? I must have because I'd been asleep for 45 minutes and Spokes Rides go on all day. Terrible nightmare though. Dreamt the forecast for the afternoon on the Spokes Ride was for horrible rainy windy weather.

We went to Penicuik, because we could get home easily from there. Horror of horrors, two people locked their bikes together, and the person who owned the lock had left the key at home. I had to go in to the Hotel and ask for bolt cutters and a list of telephone numbers for taxis. And we had to leave them there. It was one of those dreams that were so real, so life like.

Was it just a dream? I went down to the garage to check my bike computer. I was at home and it was only 4:30. Strange. But no! Computer showed I had climbed 511m, ridden 37.2km at an average speed of 18.4km.

But it couldn't happen could it. Surely no one would have brought a lock and then used it to lock a bike up without checking that they had a key?

But they did, didn't they!!! Eh Chris!!!!!! It wasn't a dream. :-D

So we left the two people at the hotel. Mountain Bike and Touring Bike chained together!!! (Rumours of hybrids available next Spring perhaps?????)

RDRR!!!!! (8^(|) Doh!!!!!

One of the shortest Spokes Rides ever. Typical, ride home early 'cos it has been raining non-stop for a week and it doesn't rain. Moral of this story? If you are going to bring a lock, make sure it's locked in your pannier / bag, so if you don't have the key, you can't use it.

It's now summer. Expect to see scenery, especially if we have 2 weeks of dry weather. Won't be here in July. Mr Mark Symonds has agreed to be MC for that ride (bring a map just in case ;-) ) Apart from that, August might be a tad exciting as well!!!! You'll just have to wait and see.

It was a very nice easy ride. Kept short because of the weather forecast. And although the win did pick up in the afternoon, threatened heavy thundery showers never materialised. Was back home at 2:15pm. 10 people attended, Weather and CTC Birthday Ride claiming some regulars. Though Mark was probably revolting, being the May Day weekend, against McDonalds or Nestle or some bank or other. Max Temp 13 degrees C.

Route

From the Usher Hall: up Lothian Rod, Tollcross, Whitehouse Loan, and Canaan Lane. Up towards the Hermitage, then to Fairmilehead. Followed A703 to Bilston, Then onwards to Roslin and country roads to Auchendinny. Joined the Cycle path at the mill, circled Penicuik, resisting the steep incline of Kirkhill Road, to come out at Valleyfield. Thence back in to Penicuik for a quick lunch. Very nice lunch in a hotel, very cheap, though not very cheerful, until we found out Chris hadn't brought the key for his lock. Got phone numbers for Taxi after we enquiring about bolt cutters, 7 of us left for home (1 person lived in Penicuik, 2 were stranded). Returned though Penicuik and Milton Bridge, past Bush research station (homage to Dolly the Sheep, who can now be seen at the Royal Scottish Museum in Chambers St) and back to Fairmilehead, returning fairly fast.
