Next Spokes Ride

Sunday 3rd July 2022. Meet at 10:00 outside the Usher Hall, Lothian Rd.

Destination to be decided on Wednesday. Distance will be around 70km (42 miles). Lunch in a café.

Please check your bike before the ride, i.e. tyre pressure, chain and brakes. Bring some money for emergencies and café stops and/or post ride refreshments. Don't forget snacks to keep your energy levels up and a drink to consume en-route.

Don't forget to bring a small toolkit to fit your bike and a spare inner tube in case you get a puncture. It is much easier to replace the tube than to repair a tube, especially if you have a slow puncture.

Wet and Warm

"The bicycle had, and still has, a humane, almost classical moderation in the kind of pleasure it offers. It is the kind of machine that a Hellenistic Greek might have invented and ridden. It does no violence to our normal reactions: It does not pretend to free us from our normal environment." ~ J.B. Jackson

Despite the thunderstorms on Sunday morning, 22 of us went to Dawyck Botanic Gardens near Stobo village in the Borders. why couldn't the nice weather last one more day. Quite a long ride, over 60 miles. Well done to everyone who completed the trip, you deserve a cake you bought at Dawyck. It you don't have a cake, try the cheesecake recipe below!!!! Certainly a ride at the extreme envelope of Spokes' rides.

"This is the beginning of a new day. You have been given this day to use as you will.
You can waste it or use it for good.
What you do today is important because you are exchanging a day of your life for it.
When tomorrow comes, this day will be gone forever;
in its place is something that you have left behind...
let it be something good." ~
Ric Kausrud, 1997 After living with HIV for over 20 years, Written a few months before his death from complications from AIDS.

A big "Thank You" to everyone who turned up on Sunday. I hope I managed to leave something good. A wonderful day trip to Cairnpapple Hill, 29 people turned up, 4 people turned around to head home before we reached our goal, 25 people did the entire trip.

"Every man spins a web of light circles
And hangs this web in the sky
Or finds it hanging, already hung for him
Written as a path to travel" ~
Carl Sandburg, Webs (Good Morning, America)

It was nice seeing all those who turned up on Sunday. It was free entry weekend for Historic Scotland, so we went to Seton Collegiate Church and had lunch in Aberlady. Not a good weather forecast, which put some people off, but not the mad 16 who actually turned up, plus one who joined quite unexpectedly at the River Esk!!! Details of today's bike ride, with stats, further down this email. Even though it was 6 degrees C in the morning, the brisk wind made it feel quite raw and colder than rides earlier in the year. Fortunately it was warmer in the afternoon.

"When the spirits are low, when the day appears dark, when work becomes monotonous, when hope hardly seems worth having, just mount a bicycle and go out for a spin down the road, without thought on anything but the ride you are taking." ~ Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, January 18, 1896, Scientific American Magazine

The meal was a great success, 19 people turned to the Annpurna Vegetarian restaurant on April 7th. Thanks to all who turned up. Admittedly, the weather wasn't that good last Sunday, it was dark, misty, so a short ride. A downpour at 9:45 put a few off (perhaps you were stuck by the mass of people running the 10k). There were seven of us on Sunday (one was delayed by the rain, changing in to wet gear at a bus-stop, then got held up on Princes Street by the runners, but I knew another person would turn up).

We went to Mid Calder, as it was still quite icy and snowy in places after Friday's snow fall, only a smithareen of ice and snow made cycling on cycles paths a smithareen impossible. 14 of us went to Mid Calder in West Lothian, 2 returning from Balerno, leaving 12 of us to make the full return trip.
