"This is what a picture should give us, an abyss in which the eye is lost,
a secret germination, a coloured state of grace, loose consciousness.
Descend with the painter in to the dim tangled roots of things,
And rise again from them in colours,
Be steeped in the light of them" ~ Paul Cézanne
The rain ceased on Saturday, but the Sunday forecast wasn’t that good, heavy showers. 10 people turned up for the longer ride to the Borders, which didn’t turn out to be as long as it should, but it was a wonderful ride. There was a fair breeze, but it didn’t make cycling too difficult, however, as we cycled south, grey clouds and yellow green of moorland grass gave the landscape a flat apperance. This of course, could have also have been the result of their being no more hills to climb as we were at the top!!! Unfortunately, we did have to use the A7, but on Sunday morning, traffic was extremely light, and the road is fairly wide.
"A shadow’s image on the rainy pavement,
walking in wonder past the vivid windows,
a half-contented guest among my ghosts?
Or one who, imagining light, air, sun,
can now take root in life, inherit love?" ~ Denise Levertov "Poem"
Not much of a summer this August. I wasn't hopeful when I looked out of the window. The rain was pouring. Fortunately, by 9:15, it had stopped, and a grey sky hung over Edinburgh. Hopefully summer will return and we can stop imagining light, air and sun, as we did on the Spokes Ride.
"We should come home from adventures, and perils, and discoveries every day with new experience and character" ~ Henry David Thoreau
Thanks to those who showed up on Sunday. When I turned up there were three shivering specimens sheltering at the bus stop. The conversation soon turned to waterproofs, mainly efficiency and heat retention properties. As more turned up, more suggestions were made for the coffee stop at Caffe Nero. I decided that this was the best course for the group, especially as it wasn't very warm, and see if the weather turned for the better.

"Respect your fellow human being, treat them fairly, disagree with them honestly, enjoy their friendship, explore your thoughts about one another candidly, work together for a common goal and help one another achieve it." ~ Bill Bradley
The longer Summer Spokes Ride took place on the 20th July, 8 of us went to Muiravonside Country Park in Falkirk District, west of Linlithgow. Fortunately, the rain had stopped, well got no further west than Edinburgh. Although breezy on the way out, we avoided, it was a very pleasant cycle ride. We found a nice sheltered area for lunch, where we could sit out of the wind and in the sun. The grass was a bit damp. Overall distance was 85 km, about 53 miles.

"I have spread my dreams beneath your feet. Tread softly because you tread on my dreams." - W.B. Yeats
A trip that started off looking really good, but persistent rain curtailed the ride. A complete opposite to the May Ride, it still provided some interesting experiences..
